"In a degraded and semi-arid farming area in India, simple science-driven changes to the landscape have colored the horizon, and a village’s fortunes, with green.
In the Latur district in the central western state of Maharashtra, 40 years of erratic rainfall, groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and crop failures have impoverished the local people.
In the village of Matephal, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) launched a project in 2023 that aimed at addressing these challenges through integrated landscape management and climate-smart farming practices. [Note: Meaning they've achieved this much in just two years!]
Multiple forms of data collection allowed ICRISAT to target precise strategies for each challenge facing the 2,000 or so people in Matephal.
Tumblr media
Key interventions focused on three critical areas: water conservation, land enhancement with crop diversification, and soil health improvement. Rainwater harvesting structures recharged groundwater around 1,200 acres, raising water tables by 12 feet and securing reliable irrigation. Farm ponds provided supplemental irrigation, while embanking across 320 acres reduced soil erosion.
Farmers diversified their crops, converting 120 or so acres of previously fallow land into productive farmland with legumes, millets, and vegetables. Horticulture-linked markets for fruits and flowers improved income stability.
Weather monitoring equipment was also installed that actively informed sustainable irrigation practices.
“It is a prime example of how data-driven approaches can address complex agricultural challenges, ensuring interventions are precise and impactful. Matephal village is a model for other semi-arid regions in India and beyond,” said Dr. Stanford Blade, Director General-Interim at ICRISAT.
Farmers actively participated in planning and decision-making, fostering long-term commitment.
“This ICRISAT project improved yields, diversified crops, and boosted incomes. It also spared women from walking over a kilometer for drinking water, now available in the village for people and animals,” said Mr. Govind Hinge of Matephal village.
Looking ahead, ICRISAT writes it wants to use Matephal as a case study to scale these methods across India’s vast and drier average. As Matephal’s fields flourish, the village is a testament to the power of collaboration and science in transforming lives and landscapes."

I just watched Shekhar Home (2024) by BBC India/JioCinema. With Kay Kay Menon & Ranvir Shorey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite being inspired by BBCSH, it manages to overcome the cases, and better explain them, making the references to the canon even more evident. And it takes place in the 90s.
The first episode is an adaptation of Study in Pink, but unlike BBCSH the explanation and motivations of the killer are more coherent, and Shekhar is smarter than Sherlock when it comes to facing the killer:
Shekhar / Sherlock
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second episode is based on the story of the "League of Redheads" with a contextualization to Indian society and I found it incredible, the same occurs in the adaptation of "Scandal in Bohemian", Irene's motivations are social justice policies, and Shekhar helps her. (She is beautiful and sings beautifully)
Tumblr media
The fourth episode brings together "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Devil's Foot", again in a well-contextualized.
The fifth episode is a flashback, and Shekhar was a college professor of Forensic Science, who occasionally helped the police, such as Dr. Joseph Bell.
The sixth episode is AMAZING, no spoiler about it.
Shekhar and Sahni's (Watson) relationship develops very quickly, they are soon friends and then detective partners.
Shekhar: What would I have done without you?
Tumblr media
Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson's version are very funny. Mycroft is here too. Big Brother
Sahni wants their business to make money so they can pay the rent, which Shekhar is against. Sahni is also active in the investigations, as much a detective as Shekhar.
The series is AMAZING, so good, and the ending is SURPRISING AND SHOCKING.

Another 'wonderful news' from Russia for your consideration! This week, the BRICS forum on traditional values took place in Moscow. And it was fucking insane.
In short, the opening meeting was BRICS countries representatives verbally jerking off on how well they oppress or plan to oppress their people especially women. The only person who bothered to contradict this narrative was Egyptian female writer Doha Mustafa Assy.
I will translate some quotes from the russian article. https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/7311174
Russia: "At some point the roles for women have begun to change towards independence and self-sufficiency. We, of course, love and respect our women very much, but we want them to pay more attention to their families, men and children. We do not want them to strive for business, politics, economics, power, or culture. <...> The main traditional value is the preservation of natural purpose, where a woman continues the family line and a man inspires her to give birth to children."
Pakistan: "Any traditional religion upholds and promotes social values and traditions. No father would want to harm his family. No mother would want to break up or disintegrate her family. This <rejection of family values> is deliberately imposed on us and promoted by some power circles”
Ethiopia: "In our country it is traditionally women who do the cooking, teaching children and other family duties. So the man's role is not as big as the woman's, and this tradition gives the man the freedom to behave like a child." (?????)
Uganda: [This country experience is “extremely important to the discussion of legislative protection of religious values,” emphasized russian politician Dmitry Kuznetsov, referring to the fact that in Uganda same-sex relations are prohibited, and in some cases violators face life imprisonment or even the death penalty.] “We did this to make sure that the country would be preserved. I would encourage countries to behave in such a way that the culture that exists in each country is not imposed on others.” btw Brazil and South Africa representatives didn't say a word here even though their countries legalized same-sex mafrriage years ago.
Brazil: "Marriage in no longer a goal for our citizens and the country has the highest divorce rate in history. Meanwhile, children are most often left with their mothers, with fathers unwilling to take part in their upbringing. As a result, many Brazilian boys are growing up without a father figure and 9% of male inmates in prisons don't even know their father's name. Shifting the balance in favor of women leads to the fact that the position of feminism is growing, and the number of people who identify as LGBT people is growing.” At the end of his speech, he marveled, “This is my first time in Russia, and I didn't know you guys were so conservative. I'm so happy, it's so impressive!” He also admitted that “the people of Brazil know nothing about Russia,” and Dmitry Kuznetsov promised: “We will come to you and tell you all about our saving conservatism.”
Egypt: As I mentioned in the beginning the only person who actively argued against this trend was Doha Mustafa Assy. She said: "We on the contrary has a struggle against patriarchy. Tradition and religion are not on women's side, they help men. A lot of women in Egypt ask for divorce only because they feel like slaves at home. He (the husband) has the right not to let her leave the house according to tradition. BRICS is India, it's China, it's Russia, it's Egypt. We are very different. And maybe what you are trying to do in Russia has already became a problem for us”.
To be honest I don't know what will come out of this forum. Maybe it's just empty posturing, maybe BRICS countries just sent people who had free time on their hand here as a formality. But I despair reading these quotes; twenty years ago we sent a singing duet posing as lesbians to Eurovision; ten years ago I was watching lesbian drama Blue Is the Warmest Colour in a full theater. Soviet Union gave women some attempt in an equal rights in fucking 1917 and we were the first country to send a woman in space. What happened? How has it turned this way? We are now friends with some of the most patriarchal countries in the world and with fucking North Korea. They are planning to remove the Taliban's terrorist status.
What the hell.

Mainland Southeast Asian sambar Rusa unicolor cambojensis
Observed by martin53, CC BY-NC
Sambar sore spots
Sambar Rusa unicolor, large deer of South and Southeast Asia, exhibit throughout much of their range a strange characteristic that despite its rather obvious (and somewhat grotesque) appearance remains poorly understood. This is the "sore spot", an inflamed-looking red patch on the throat, often surrounded by bare skin where the hair has fallen (or been rubbed) away. Note that the female on the right in this photo has a more prominent sore spot and a far more extensive bare area around it. At certain times, the sore spot weeps an oily whitish or reddish fluid.
Early explanations for why sambar got this sore spot varied - from parasitism to leprosy to overconsumption of wild olives - but modern observation indicates that the sore spot is some kind of gland. Field observations from India in the early 20th century suggested a sexual function for this mysterious gland, with the spot becoming more obvious and active during the rut in November and December. Countering this point, however, is the fact that sambar which would not be sexually active - pregnant and lactating females, and males in velvet - will also show sore spots. In some parts of their range, particularly places where they have been introduced, sambar do not appear to develop sore spots at all. This may also be the case in captivity. Perhaps this mysterious gland facilitates some form of chemical communication where sambar exist a low density, and is thus unnecessary in high-density populations. Certainly, much remains to be understood of this bloody-looking feature of this widespread deer.

I see what you're getting at in regards to the importance of breast support in fantasy fashion, but aren't there many non-western cultures that did not necessarily use clothes as breast support? Ranging from those that just let it swing to those which might just use a light, non-rigid undergarment? People with (larger) breasts continued to do labor and physical activities in those societies, so I don't think it's impossible to imagine a fashion that doesn't include this type of feature. By the same logic of "women aren't dumb and wouldn't have worn corsets and stays if they were torture devices" I think we have to accept that women wouldn't have skipped breast support if it was highly uncomfortable for them
there are some cultures in various places that currently or previously have forgone breast support garments, yes!
it's not a strict Western/Non-Western divide, I will say- for example, traditional Japanese clothing includes a bandage-like arrangement called sarashi (sarashi is the name of the cloth, but came to be synonymous with the breast-covering application in some cases) that supports and somewhat minimizes the bust without binding completely flat the way we think of it for gender-related purposes. or the angia in India, a garment that dates back at least to the 19th century and not further than the 13th and was sort of a cross between a blouse and a bra as I understand it. it's believed to have been brought to India by Muslim conquests, by some historians
there have also been moments in western history when breast support was either absent or is not currently well-understood by historians. in many parts of medieval Europe, for example, it wasn't addressed in contemporary sources. the Lengberg Castle "bra," dated c. 1440-1485, is one rare example of what equally rare primary sources sometimes call a "breastbag," but the evidence is pretty thin on the ground
and I do wonder about that! how is it not uncomfortable, speaking as someone of medium bust size who's experienced pain when wearing a bra with perished elastic for too long? I've tried looking into this online, and nobody seems to have asked women in modern societies where total toplessness is the norm
you see a lot of braless advocates from cultures where bras are the norm claiming that bras are the cause of the discomfort: they weaken the muscles and make it painful to go without. but photos of women from opless cultures show just as much sagging as any woman who's worn a bra may experience, so the muscles can't be THAT affected
so what's the deal? how are or were these women comfortable where many other women the world over would not be? no idea and nobody's researching it. argh
however, I should have been clearer that I was talking about fantasy/historical books in a western-inspired setting. I thought context and the prior posts about similar topics on this blog would do thatt for me, which was my mistake. this particular book was set in a world heavily inspired by early-mid 19th century Germany
books written by authors from Bra Cultures, about time periods and places where breast support was a commonplace thing. where it's just...not addressed. that's what annoys me

do you have any advice for arguing with people who are only passively transphobic?
in a conversation about trans rights they compared trans people to people changing their race and im not experienced enough to actually put into words why that’s wrong
-a cis dude
I've had this one sitting in my inbox a bit, but my thoughts drifted back to it.
First off, this is not "passive" transphobia. This is active transphobia. If they've heard or are using an argument like that, it means they've spent at least some time evaluating their views about trans people, and actively chose to use that argument.
Second off, with that in mind, realize that they are not arguing in good faith. You won't convince them. Not in a couple minutes of conversation, not with a snappy retort. I have a deep nuanced answer to this. I usually don't bother arguing this point, but I do argue about "biologically female" a lot, and in my experience, they don't want to hear any nuanced argument. In fact, they think nuance is a point against you. If it can't be explained "simply", then it's no longer "common sense" and they don't care.
So. Yeah. In general, it's best to assess whether you even should engage in the first place, before you engage.
That said, what is the nuanced argument?
Full disclosure on my perspective, I'm a white, American trans woman, have lived in the US my whole life. I have some immigrant family and friends from various backgrounds. I'm just explaining my perspective here, since there's many nuances that I wont be the best person to talk about, so I welcome correction and additional perspective.
Two things to say here.
First, a spicy take, apparently: I think you can be trans racial. Just, not in the way that people like to think.
Race, like so-called "biological sex", is a set of artificially constructed categories formed from a random collection of physical traits. Which physical traits are chosen as "racial", as well as which traits belong to which race, is dependent on the society you're living in. As culture changes, or as an individual moves through different cultures, there race will often change, making them, in a sense, "trans racial".
Immigrant culture is probably the clearest example of this. I'll use my family history. It's a limited perspective, but I don't want to speak to other people's experiences.
My heritage is from a region of Europe that would probably start shit in my notes just by mentioning it. Racial differences for my family have been perceived based on MUCH different criteria than they have been stateside. Wars and genocides have been enacted over that perception. Those racial categories are "real", not in the sense that they represent innate biological differences, but that they have real effects on how someone navigates through a particular society. If my family had not immigrated, I would be considered a different "race" than people of nearby countries, or within that same country.
And yet. All of that is gone for me. My racial experience is that of a white american. I don't even have an accent. I can keep in touch with my heritage, and I try to, but my "race" as it affects my position in american society, is fully that of a white american. Since I'm born here, it's always been that way. Everyone who would be considered a different race back where my family is from, would probably all be considered white (or "ambiguous" in some cases) here.
Already, this contrasts with immigrant experiences even within my family- treatment dramatically changes depending on where you are, and how much you "assimilate".
I'm only using my background as an example because I don't want to speak for anyone else's experience. No, I'm not saying I'm "trans racial" because someone in my family is an immigrant, I'm just trying to provide a framework from my experience. It's a limited perspective, because my appearance is white. But there are many, MANY other examples. Take someone from India: a massive, consolidated subcontinent with hundreds of thousands of ethnic and cultural distinctions... That are all treated much, much differently when you move that to a different country.
"But Sierra," I hear you say, "this analogy really breaks down when making one to one comparisons. Are you really saying that being something, like a particular race or gender, is solely a function of how society treats you? How does this support transgender identities? Like, someone can't just 'become' black or whatever. I get what you said earlier, but there's still a limited scope of how someone can 'transition' between races in that framework."
An excellent point, which brings me to the next point. Disclaimer, it's kind of stolen from Contrapoints.
Both race and gender are societal frameworks based on pieces of information about an individual, either sex characteristics/presentation, or arbitrary "ethnic" traits.
The difference between these two, however, is who has experience with them. Ethnic groups are, by definition, groups of people with familial lineages and culture shared between them.
Masculinity and femininity, however, are shared experiences for all of humankind. A white person will never have the lifelong experience of being treated as a black person. However, every human being, even cisgender people, are exposed to the enforcement of gender, sex characteristics different than their own, and the policing of those categories. Every single person on this planet has varying degrees of "male" and "female", "man" and "woman", and everything that is neither or both, and has been treated accordingly at different points in their life. The same is not necessarily true about race. Even though biologically, racial differences are essentially nothing (humans are actually a very genetically bottlenecked species), society picks out it's treatment of what it determines to be race, and those experiences become isolated.
Again. These are my thoughts as a white person. If this is trivializing, or poorly represents something, or if I should be corrected, PLEASE let me know. It is, however, an interesting topic.
But crucially, as I mentioned earlier, it's a nuanced topic. And a nuanced answer will get you nowhere with someone arguing in bad faith.

Social media and stupidity
Tumblr media
Honestly my explanation could end here by this readers added context page, but stupidity levels are too high in this world so
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah Kashmir is a heavily militarized area because our neighboring state’s terrorists love terrorizing the poor people there. SO Of course YOU FUCKING DOLTS it is going to be heavily militarized. And by the way ever since the URI surgical strike, the instances of MAJOR terror attacks has gone down. Well we did not have to work really hard to tie this incident to Pakistan as the the terrorist group TRF, that is based in Pakistan, an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba which conducted many terror activities, has taken responsibility for the Pahalgam massacre. So it does not take a genius to put two and two together, plus our intelligence has been gather information on terror camps since YEARS so we were well prepeare dot strike in case something happened.
Tumblr media
Well, this part is what convinces many people to side with Pakistan, “that India refused a joint investigation”. By the way in the past India HAS had many “unbiased” investigations with Pakistan in which Pakistan declines all accountability. However, all terrorist atatcals lead back to Pakistan based terror groups. After the 26/11 attacks they claimed that there was no Pakistani connection and said that it was India that bombed itself, but then everyone knows the ISI, David Headley and Rana connection.
These are two newspapers with opposing ideologies but they are on the same terms regarding the connection of headley, rana and the ISI official Major Iqbal. The American side of the investigation also shows Major Iqbal as a mastermind of the 26/11 attacks.
Also, post the Pahalgam attacks, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif has admitted Pakistan's involvement in promoting terrorism, including funding and backing terrorist groups. The Pakistani Defence Minister in conversation with Sky News, Asif says, "We have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about 3 decades and the West, including Britain."

Now I do acknowledge that despite our militaries best tries to avoid collateral damage, there was some and my heart goes out to those innocent souls. However, this is not the fault of the Indian army but of the Pakistani terrorists that cause their own people to suffer due to their extremism.
This is why people, things on social media need to be double checked.

Summary: The Bennets are South Asian.
Sample:
When an Englishman desires activity, inactivity, change, stasis, simplicity, intricacy, strangeness, familiarity, or the pleasure of managing, of not managing, or of having his own way, he will look—very naturally—to India. However little calculated that land, in itself, may be to fulfill these little caprices, its ideal is so fixed in his mind, that he is sure to find something within the stores of its ancient civilisation to answer to his notions.
Such was the case with Mr. Edward Bennet. The second son of a minor country squire, he was faced, at his majority, with the necessity of fixing upon some course, which would enable him to make his own way in the world. From a scholarly bent, which gave him a good deal of inborn curiosity; and because the idleness of habits, which he had heard to be common in the East, attracted him more than the manly rigour required for the practice of the legal or ecclesiastical professions in England; from these reasons, and perhaps still others, he left a country happily enlightened by sound philosophy, and the only true revelation, for one burdened with superstition and gross idolatry: he joined, in short, in the service of the East India Company at Bombay, soon after it was ceded to the English. Once his innate indolence had overcome the exigencies of the journey thither, it was not often further disturbed by any requirements of his post. His work as a writer for the Company kept him largely within its settlements in the western part of the state of Hindoostan; on the rare occasions when he left Bombay, it was only for Chaul or Bassein.
Mr. Edward Bennet had always intended to marry upon returning to his native England, when his contributions of learning to the Company would have earned him an independence. He was yet in India, however, when he was nearing forty; he grew increasingly susceptible to beauty, and ripe for picking; he was caught at last by a girl with gentle manners, a generous dowry, and remarkable beauty (so far as we can reconcile beauty with the olive complexion). She was the daughter of a Mahomedan merchant and moneylender, who had much to do with the India Company, and was very pleased to furnish one of its votaries with this his most precious good.
